The story of Malaikottai Uchchi Pillayar Temple- Trichy

I have introduced myself earlier that I hail from Tiruchirapalli- a land of temples. I would like to share a funny story about Lord Vigneshwara and king Vibheeshnan. After Lord Rama had a victory against Ravana, Vibheeshnan, along with Lord Hanuman accompanied him to Ayodya. After Some days, Lord Rama presented Lord Renganath a's statue to Vibheeshnan when he left for Lanka. But Lord Ram had very strictly told Vibheeshnan that he should never keep the statue down, until unless he wants to do the sthapana of the statue in that place. Vibheeshnan was very proud that he is carrying the Lord himself with him. So to strike a rod at his proudness Lord Vigneshwara sketched a plan. It was evening time when Vibheeshnan crossed the river kaveri. He wanted to do his evening prayers. He searched for someone who can hold the statue of Lord Renganatha. He found a shepherd boy grazing his cattle. He called the boy and requested him to hold the statue and gave him instructions on not to keep the statue down at any cost. The shepherd boy was none other than our Lord Vigneshwara who had disguised himself. The boy told Vibheeshana one condition that he would count till 15 and before that he should return otherwise he would keep the statue down. Vibheeshana was very happy as he found someone to help him. Lord Vignesh started counting and inspite of Vibheeshnan's warnings and requests kept the statue down. Vibheeshnan came running and tried to take the statue out. But according to the condition laid by Lord Rama it cannot be moved. Vibheeshnan got angry and started chasing the boy. The boy ran up a hillock and sat at the zenith. It is said that Vineeshnan hit the boy with a stone and the mark is still seen on the forehead of Lord Vigneshwara. Vibheeshnan later realised that the boy was none other than Lord Ganesha himself. So stands  the Sri Renganatha Swami temple at one bank in Srirangam and the Uchchi Pillayar Temple at the other bank. "uchchi" in tamil means top most point or the zenith. So goes the name. It is also said that King Vibheeshnan who is one of the sapta chiranjeevis still visits the temple of Sri Renganatha every year on a particular day to do his prayers.
